For the last decades, FAO has been developing international guidance and standards for land cover monitoring.
The Land Characterization System (LCHS) is an open-source web application for developing land cover classes and legends based on the latest iteration of the ISO 19144-2 standard (also known as LCML).
Eventually, it will be expanded for considering land use aspects. LCHS is meant to supersede FAO LCCSv3 software and import classes and legends from it, as well as interface with FAO LCLR catalog.
